Baja Basics The Place, The People
The Place: Baja California, Mexico is made up of two Mexican states: Baja North and Baja South. Our ministry to date has been focused in Baja North. The Baja is a long peninsula that begins at the southern border of California and Arizona and extends southward with the Pacific Ocean on its west side and the Sea of Cortez on its east side. Tijuana, located just across the border from San Diego, California, is the Baja’s largest city. Baja North has varied terrain and climates. It has many coastal cities, some hilly regions and lots of desert. Some cities are “tourist” types (like Rosarito and Ensenada) and some are typical, medium size Mexican towns (like Tecate and Mexicali). Houses and businesses are mostly unlike their North American counterparts. Many are made with scraps of lumber or salvaged materials like tin or pallets. Carpet is virtually non-existent in this part of Mexico. Most floors are cement, tile or dirt. Houses are generally much smaller than we are used to and house many more people.
The People: Overall the Mexican people are incredibly friendly, giving, loving and fun. The lifestyle is a little more slowly paced and oriented more toward having time to enjoy relationships. Sharing the gospel is made easier in Mexico due to the openness of the people. The Christians we work with pour out their love and generosity on us. They truly make us feel like family. Non-Christians in Baja North are usually very friendly toward Americans. There are a few that don’t welcome us, but the percentage is very, very small. The Mexican Saints have an amazing love for Jesus Christ and live as a true “light upon a hill.” |
